What’s on in November?

November 1st – Chestnut festivity – Nun’s valley village

An old tradition is kept alive in the valley of the Nuns, a small and iconic village surrounded by mountains. Agriculture is one of the main activities here and the chestnut trees are part of the landscape. Traditionally, the chestnut is used in their specific gastronomy, roasted, in a soup or even used as a liqueur. The festivity is a way of promoting this autumn fruit among visitors.

November 3rd to 11th – Madeira Piano Fest 2018 – Municipal Theatre – Funchal

The Friends of the Conservatory of Music of Madeira (AACMM), will be starting this season with the fourth edition of “Madeira PianoFest”, as part of their 25th anniversary celebrations under the artistic direction of Robert Andres.

This event is organised in a co-production with the Municipality of Funchal and with the support of the Regional Directorate for Culture.

Simultaneously, an exhibition commemorating the 25th anniversary of AACMM’s activity will be held in the Hall of the Theatre.

The event starts with a Piano Recital by the Russian pianist Yuri Didenko, a professor at the Moscow Conservatory who will perform works by Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, both representing the romantic era.

November 9th – Show named Trovas & Canções / Atores, poetas e cantores (actors, poets and singers) – MUDAS.museum – Arco da Calheta – 9:30 p.m.

This project is a tribute to portuguese language and brings together two generations of actors, Rui de Carvalho and João de Carvalho, father and son together with other wonderful artists including musicians.

November 5th to 11th – 21st International Madeira Bridge Open – Vidamar Resorts Madeira Hotel – Funchal

An international tournament of bridge gaming organised by the Madeira Bridge Association. A total of 50 teams and pairs gather for a week in a informal and friendly atmosphere meeting new partners but also trying to win a prize that this year will complete 25.000 euros.

November 11th – Saint Martin Festivities – Saint Martin parish – Funchal

November 11 is celebrated as Saint Martin’s day in honour to Martin of Tours, a 4th century roman soldier who is known for a certain miracle. Riding on horseback in a snowstorm, Martin came upon a nearly naked beggar. Not having any money or food, Martin took his sword, cut his cloak in half and gave the cloth to the beggar. Legend has it that clouds dispersed, the sun came out, and Jesus said to the angels, “Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptized; he has clothed me.”

In Portugal this day has become to be the one to celebrate the maturation of the year’s wine production. So it is typical to savour some wine of that year and eat roasted cod fish, as well as roasted chestnuts.

November 24th – 78th anniversary of the Funchal main market – Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmer’s market)

Celebrate with us the 78th anniversary of one of the most pituresque markets you will ever meet, the Mercado dos Lavradores in the centre of Funchal. The celebration will be held around 11 a.m. with several surprises and entertainement for everyone.
