What’s on in July?

» 1st, Monday (public holiday)

Celebration of the Region’s Autonomy:

Among these celebrations one of the highlights is the Solemn Session of the Regional Legislative Assembly, the deposition of flowers at the Monument to the Autonomy by the Region’s officials, and the “Te Deum” Ceremony at the Cathedral (Sé) of Funchal.

Note: Political and Administrative Autonomy

The Political-Administrative Autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira was enshrined in the Portuguese Constitution in 1976. The Madeira Archipelago is an Autonomous Region of the Portuguese Republic, with a Political-Administrative Statute and self-governing bodies: the Legislative Assembly of Madeira and the Regional Government. The political, administrative, financial, economic and fiscal autonomy of the Autonomous Region of Madeira is exercised within the framework of the Portuguese Constitution and the Political-Administrative Statute of the Region.

Concert Machico town – southeast

Carminho is the voice that this year will sing in the Concert of the Day of the Autonomous Region of Madeira and the Madeiran Communities, a concert that takes place in Machico and that will join the fado singer and the Classical Orchestra of Madeira. It is next July 1st, at 9 pm in the Forum Square of Machico. In addition to this show, the program includes two concerts in Funchal.

Concert by the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra – Praça do Povo, Funchal

The Madeira Mandolin Orchestra, Europe’s oldest and youngest mandolin orchestra, will mark this date with a Special Concert at Praça do Povo.

35th edition of the Regional Folklore Dancing – Santana

This event is held in Santana where folk groups from several regions of Madeira and other countries are invited to perform during a 24-hour period (with intervals). There are several food and drink stalls and entertainment throughout the night.

Funchal Jazz Festival – Santa Catarina Park:

Funchal Jazz Festival has become a well known event on Madeira taking place in the beautiful Parque of Santa Catarina. Enjoy performances of famous international artists and national musicians as well as local ones. This event is organized annually by the Municipal Council of Funchal, hosted this year in the second week of July. Is jazz among your musical choices? Join us for these 3 days.

64th edition of the Agricultural Fair/Cattle Fair – Porto Moniz

The Santa Agricultural Fair, an event which dates back to 1955, seeks to foster the development of the local livestock sector with the presence of many exhibitors with their cattle and exposition of products and materials related to agricultural activity, as well as stalls selling food and drinks among several madeiran traditions.

Festivities in hounour to Our Lady of Carmel (Nº Sra. Do Carmo) – at Igreja do Carmo/Funchal

On July 16, at 6:30 p.m., the Solemn Eucharist of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will be celebrated followed by procession. Join us. The church is situated in the centre of the city at Carmo street.

Note: The feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16, was first instituted in the late 14th century in order to celebrate the approval of the rule of the Carmelite Order, which happened a hundred years earlier.

Summer Opening Festival

This urban music festival in previous editions welcomed some of the most prominent names in the world of Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, and Reggae, including the Morcheeba band, Jazznova band , Dengaz, Carlão, Frankie Chavez, “Gabriel o Pensador”, Richie Campbell, the portuguese band Buraka Som Sistema, and the brasilians Natiruts, Seu Jorge, Nelson Freitas, Mundo Segundo & Sam The Kid, Bezegol, Dillaz, Átoa and the madeirian band “Men On The Couch“, among many others. Join us on this open air music event, between the 19th and the 21st of July. The entrance is not free.

Gastronomy festival – Santana – Northeast Madeira:

When customs and beliefs are transferred from generation to generation they become traditions. Santana keeps the people’s traditions quite alive. Gastronomy is a good example. For a week, in the vicinity of the town hall, madeiran and tourists can try typical food from the Island as well as enjoy music and other entertainement.

Sea Week/Semana do Mar – Porto Moniz – Northwest Madeira

Limpet Festival – Paul do Mar village (southwest Madeira)

Madeira Bike Tour – Madeira Island

This is bicycle racing along the winding roads on Madeira Island. It is held on paved roads. There will be different groups of participants, junior and amateurs.
