The Cathedral of Funchal, considered to be one of the masterpieces of Manueline art in Madeira , was built by order of king Manuel I and was consecrated in 1514.

Inside, there is a remarkable high altar with twelve paintings dating back to the 15h century. The baptismal font and the pulpit, in Portuguese marble, were some of King Manuel I donations.

The vision of the whole, harmonious distribution of the three naves with Gothic archways show a Medieval influence.

The Holy chapel is decorated with a rich gilded woodcarving.

One of the treasures of great historical value is the 15th century Moorish style wood carved ceiling, which covers the whole inside of the Cathedral.

This National Monument should not be missed!
